Young Supply

Young Supply is committed to making customers’ business lives as easy as possible. For the company, this means being accessible anytime and anywhere it is needed.

The company operates 17 branch locations throughout the state of Michigan as well as in Toledo and Holland, Ohio, and offers 24/7, 365-day-a-year service. “We will do whatever it takes for our customers,” the company says. “We are the premier refrigeration and air conditioning wholesale supply house in Michigan and Ohio.”

Young Supply provides refrigeration, heating, cooling, ventilation and foodservice equipment and parts to licensed contractors and service companies. Brands stocked by Young Supply include Mitsubishi Electric, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, American Standard, 3M and Rheem, which it added in 2013. “We buy direct from a variety of top-of-the-line manufacturers and are knowledgeable in the product lines we supply,” the company says.

In addition to offering a wide range of components and equipment to customers, Young Supply also helps its customers best understand how these products are used. The company operates “Learning Centers” in its Farmington and Troy, Mich., and Toledo locations that offer certification and field training courses for Mitsubishi Electric and other equipment.

Managing Challenges

Young Supply’s branches are supplied from a central warehouse distribution center. The company owns and maintains its own fleet of trucks. “We provide full coverage to the markets we serve,” the company says. “We are committed to the complete satisfaction of our customers’ needs and welcome the challenges of the future while earning our right to be among those who do not simply survive challenge, but thrive on resolving challenges when they arise.”

Recent challenges faced by the company include the downturn in the southeast Michigan economy, which was more severe and longer lasting than the Great Recession of 2008/09. “We saw five to six years of a down economy because of challenges in the automotive industry, while most of the country encountered two bad years,” the company says.

During this time, the company performed the first staff reduction in its 80-year history, but concentrated on trimming staff positions based on work ethic and attitude instead of tenure. “We did everything we could internally and externally to cut back without affecting our customers,” Young Supply adds.

Young Supply also diversified its services during the recession by adding an engineering division, Comfort Engineering Solutions LLC. The division offers engineering services related to the use of variable refrigerant flow technology.

One Focus

Young Supply celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2015. The company credits its success to its staff, which includes “the longest-tenured branch managers and counter people in the Midwest,” it says.

The company encourages longevity by promoting from within as well as offering opportunities to the families of longtime employees. Young Supply remains owned and operated by the Vallan family.

“Our employees are an extension of our family,” the company says. “We instill in them our mission statement, which is that we want to be our customers’ supplier of choice, our vendors’ distributor of choice and our employees’ employer of choice. Everyone here is focused on one goal, and that is taking care of the customer.”
